The water sector has a new backbone for climate reporting launching a new Carbon Accounting Workbook.

UK Water Industry Research says this new tool gives water companies a single science-backed framework to track emissions accurately meet regulatory duties and build credible decarbonisation plans.

Used across England and Wales the tool underpins mandatory and voluntary reporting including Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting and wider climate disclosure rules.

The goal is consistency transparency and confidence in the numbers.

This year’s release updates the core CAW tool and locks in the latest UK Government conversion factors using the 2024 dataset.

It also integrates publicly available emissions data for chemicals used across the water sector plus UK-specific factors for water wastewater and sludge treatment developed through UKWIR research.

Alongside the tool UKWIR has published a full user guide and detailed methodology report to ensure companies can apply the data correctly and consistently.

CEO Mike Rose said: “By maintaining and continually improving tools like the CAW UKWIR is actively supporting its members in their commitment to climate action providing the essential foundation for data-driven successful decarbonisation strategies and consistent and transparent disclosures.”

The CAW has been central to the sector for nearly two decades.

Since its launch in 2007 it has given water companies a shared approach to estimating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions at a time when standards and expectations continue to evolve.

Having one industry-wide tool matters. It ensures emissions data is comparable between companies grounded in the latest science and aligned with best practice rather than fragmented spreadsheets and conflicting assumptions.

As scrutiny on climate claims tightens the CAW gives the water industry something increasingly valuable.

A common language for carbon that regulators investors and customers can trust.
