Climate and security risks are on the rise

Climate and security risks are now hitting companies at the same time and faster than they can react.

That’s the view from International SOS, which says 2026 will be the year this convergence becomes impossible to ignore.

Its new Risk Outlook shows leaders overwhelmed by cascading shocks.

Nearly six in ten say new threats are emerging faster than they can manage and almost three quarters say the window for critical decisions is shrinking.

Only 35% feel confident they can mobilise teams quickly when crises escalate.

The real danger is collision. Extreme weather, geopolitical tension, cybercrime and misinformation are no longer separate risks. Almost half of organisations say threats now overlap forcing medical and security teams to respond together rather than in silos.

Verification is a weak point. While 80% believe early detection gives them an edge only 20% trust their ability to confirm information at pace leaving companies exposed to rumour panic and slow reactions.

The updated Risk Map highlights rising instability with security ratings increasing in Iran Myanmar and Niger while India sees a shift in medical risk and Mongolia improves as stability grows.

International SOS says businesses are entering a phase where “the accelerating pace of change” strains operations, heightens mental health pressures and erodes trust.

AI could be a lifeline yet only 6% of organisations consider it important for risk management despite its ability to spot patterns and filter noise in real time.

Budgets are tightening even as threats multiply with almost 80% of specialists expecting static or reduced spending.

Mental health remains undervalued despite more than one billion people living with conditions that often overlap with climate and security crises.

The report concludes global risks are converging, the pace is rising and resilience now depends on faster intelligence and dynamic preparedness not static plans.
