Zapmap has reported rising satisfaction with the UK’s public charging network.

Its eighth annual EV charging survey, based on responses from 3,976 battery electric vehicle drivers, shows overall satisfaction with driving electric stands at 88%, slightly higher than in 2024, with only 3% of respondents saying they would like to return to a petrol or diesel car.

Despite recent cost concerns, 83% now say their EV is more cost effective to run than an internal combustion engine vehicle.

Environmental benefits remain a key motivation for 72% of drivers. Performance is becoming more important too, with 70% citing better driving characteristics as a main reason for owning an EV.

Satisfaction with public charging has improved, with the average rating for charging experience rising to 69 out of 100, five points higher than last year.

Around 60% of drivers feel public charging has improved over the past 12 months, helped by more charge points and better reliability.

Access to home charging makes little difference to confidence in the public network, which stands at roughly 73 to 74% for both those with and without a home charger.

Around 23% of respondents do not have home charging, slightly up on last year, suggesting more people without driveways are switching to electric.

Charging hubs have now overtaken motorway service areas as the most popular place to charge.

GRIDSERVE Electric Highway and Instavolt are the most used public networks among respondents over the past six months, underlining the growing importance of reliable rapid charging for longer journeys.
