Italy’s utility-scale battery boom is accelerating fast with the south turning into one of Europe’s hottest storage zones.
Just under 4GWh is already built or operating and more than 2GWh is under construction as developers pile into regions where solar and wind are overwhelming local demand.
Puglia is the epicentre. It has low population, huge renewable output and the highest curtailment risk in the country which makes storage economics irresistible.
Developers have already secured approvals for 8.5GWh in the region and more projects are heading into planning every month.
The model is simple. Store cheap excess power in the south then push it north where demand is higher industry is heavier and prices spike more often.
That is why Lombardy Lazio and the industrial corridor are drawing developers that want to arbitrage the gap between oversupplied and constrained parts of the grid.
The pipeline has exploded from about 300MWh of submissions in 2019 to roughly 42GWh entering planning in 2024.
More than 100 developers are now active backed by funds from every corner of the globe rather than just Italian giants like Enel or Sorgenia.
