India added 4.9GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first nine months of 2025, a rise of nearly 161% compared with the same period in 2024, according to Mercom India’s Q3 2025 India Rooftop Solar Market Report.
In Q3 2025 alone, installations reached 2.1GW, the highest quarterly total to date. The figure marks a 29% increase on Q2 2025 and a rise of more than 164% compared with Q3 2024.
The PM Surya Ghar initiative remained the main driver of growth, accounting for 73% of all rooftop installations during the quarter. The industrial segment contributed nearly 20%, while commercial and government installations made up around 6% and more than 1% respectively. The CAPEX model represented 84% of Q3 deployment.
Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group, said residential systems now make up 75% of the market. “We expect this trend to continue until the PM Surya Ghar target is reached,” he said. “To keep this momentum on track, quality control in residential systems and persistent cost and supply challenges will need ongoing attention.”
Uttar Pradesh led rooftop additions in Q3 2025 with 16% of national installations, followed by Maharashtra with more than 15% and Gujarat with 14%. For 9M 2025, Gujarat held the top position with more than 16%, ahead of Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
India’s cumulative rooftop solar capacity reached 18.6GW by September 2025. Assam recorded the fastest growth rate, achieving a compounded quarterly rise of more than 35% between Q3 2024 and Q3 2025.
Tender activity also increased, with more than 1.5GW issued in Q3 2025, up nearly 19% on the previous quarter and above 311% year on year.
