What if there was one global rulebook for going green – a single standard that finally defines what net zero means?
That’s exactly what’s coming – and it could change everything.
In this week’s Net Hero Podcast I am joinde by Susan Taylor Martin, CEO of BSI, talking about the world’s first verifiable ISO Net Zero Standard, set to launch in 2026.
It’s the biggest collaboration of its kind, with 1,200 experts from 100 countries shaping one simple question: how do we measure real progress on the road to net zero?
“People are crying out for clarity,” says Taylor Martin. “We’ve got too many frameworks, too much confusion. This new standard brings everything together into one definition of what good looks like – something that can be verified, tracked and trusted.”
The standard is being built by consensus across science, industry and governments – a global first. “It’s not just another guideline,” she adds.
“It’s practical. It’ll help businesses of any size understand what to do next, and how to prove they’re genuinely cutting emissions, not just talking about it.”
The podcast dives into BSI’s latest Net Zero Barometer, which shows confidence among UK firms has dropped sharply – only 55% now believe we’ll hit the 2050 target, down from 76% last year. “Small businesses especially are struggling,” says Taylor Martin. “They want to act but they need guidance. Eighty-three per cent of them told us they want clear direction on what to do.”
She also calls out the need for credible verification to stop greenwashing: “We’ve got to move from slogans to standards. If you claim to be net zero, you should be able to prove it.”
From confusion to clarity, this episode explores how a British-led initiative could help rebuild global trust in sustainability.
