SSE has completed its 101MW Yellow River Wind Farm in Rhode, County Offaly, marking Ireland’s newest onshore wind project.

The 29-turbine development is now fully operational and generating renewable energy to power almost 75,000 homes each year while displacing nearly 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The milestone follows grid connection upgrades by EirGrid at the nearby Derryiron Transmission Station and the successful completion of turbine commissioning and safety checks.

Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Renewables, said: “SSE is working hard to turn Ireland’s ambitions for climate action and energy security into reality and the completion of the country’s newest onshore wind farm at Yellow River is the latest demonstration of our commitment.”

He added that SSE is ready “to play its part with government, industry partners and communities to ramp up Ireland’s efforts to meet our 2030 emissions targets.”

The project, delivered under SSE’s Net Zero Acceleration Programme, forms part of the company’s €900 million investment in Irish renewable energy by 2027.

All electricity generated is contracted under a 16.5-year RESS 3 agreement, with SSE committing to a multi-million-euro community fund supporting local projects and amenities.

Heather Donald, Director of Onshore Wind, Solar, Battery (GB & Ireland) for SSE Renewables, said the project’s delivery “provided a significant boost to the economy in Offaly and the surrounding region through construction employment and supply chain benefits.”
