Schneider Electric has started production at its new smart manufacturing facility in Scarborough following a £42 million investment, with full commissioning due by the end of 2025.

The 16,500 sq m plant will produce critical electrical equipment to support Britain’s transition to cleaner energy. With demand expected to rise by 40% by 2035, the site will play a key role in building energy resilience and enabling a low carbon future.

Kelly Becker, President at Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, said: “Our Scarborough site, rooted in Yorkshire expertise, gives us the scale and agility to respond quickly to market changes and support the UK’s energy transition and beyond.”

The factory is expected to cut emissions by manufacturing in the UK for UK customers, reducing global shipping, slashing costs and shortening delivery times. It will also boost local EV charging by over 110% with 30 new chargers on site.

Designed as a global blueprint for low carbon manufacturing, the factory is net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and will source 30% of its energy from onsite solar.

Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, said: “This is fantastic news for people in Scarborough… Our clean power mission is already driving investment and growth.”

The site will produce to British standards, making products export ready for Commonwealth markets. Customers can collaborate directly with engineers and designers on site, ensuring solutions meet specific project needs.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said the investment would help “keep more of our talented young people and skilled workers on the coast.”

Lord Harrington, Chair of Make UK, called it “a powerful vote of confidence in the strength and resilience of UK manufacturing.”
