New global training standards for solar technicians have launched to support the rapid expansion of the solar industry and help meet 2030 renewable energy targets.
The Global Solar Council (GSC) and the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) have unveiled the Global Solar Training Standards – a new, internationally recognised framework designed to upskill workers, improve safety and build confidence among employers as solar PV demand accelerates.
With utility-scale solar expected to deliver over half of the 11 terawatts of renewable capacity needed by 2030, the solar sector faces a significant workforce challenge.
A lack of standardised training has made it difficult to scale technician numbers while ensuring consistent safety and quality across projects.
Developed using GWO’s proven methodology and piloted in Germany, the US and the UK earlier this year, the new standards cover both installation and maintenance roles for commercial and utility-scale solar PV.
Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the GSC, said: “These standards are built by the industry, for the industry – and they come at exactly the right time.”
Employers can now access GWO-certified training providers worldwide, offering consistent courses with defined learning objectives, practical skills, and safety modules.
Jakob Lau Holst, CEO of GWO, added: “Standardised training, deployed globally, guarantees access to industry-approved skills while reducing duplication for employers.”
The framework is supported by a new Solar Training Committee, bringing together solar leaders to ensure the standards reflect real-world industry needs and regional regulations.
