The UK’s Open Networks programme, led by the Energy Networks Association (ENA), has been awarded the 2025 International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) Award of Excellence for its pioneering work in developing a flexible, low-carbon electricity system.
The award was presented in Busan, South Korea, during the Clean Energy Ministerial, which brought together global leaders to discuss smart grid policy and innovation.
Since its launch in 2017, Open Networks has been central to the UK’s energy transition, enabling the shift to Distribution System Operation (DSO) and laying the foundations for a smarter, more sustainable grid.
By working with government, Ofgem and industry partners, the programme has created the business case and market principles for distributed system operation, helping integrate renewable energy and improve grid flexibility.
Dr Avinash Aithal, Strategic Programme Director for Connections and former Head of Open Networks, said: “Open Networks has been about ensuring that the sum of our efforts is greater than our individual parts. We remain committed to continuing to work with government and global stakeholders to develop a smart and flexible energy system.”
With Open Networks completed, the next stage of flexibility market development will be led by Elexon, ensuring the UK continues to lead in sustainable energy innovation.
