This morning, Toto USA opened a $224 million

manufacturing facility in Morro,

00:06.519 –> 00:11.880

Georgia, reshoring production of high-end

one-piece toilets from the Toto Group’s plants

00:11.880 –> 00:15.760

in Asia.

Toto USA is the Japanese manufacturer’s

00:15.760 –> 00:17.944

American division,

which is based in Morro,

00:17.985 –> 00:20.864

Georgia.

The company, one of the largest plumbing

00:20.864 –> 00:25.854

manufacturers in the world, does more than

$5.34 billion in annual sales.

00:26.225 –> 00:31.545

It says it made the move to increase U.S. luxury

one-piece toilet production capacity by

00:31.545 –> 00:33.424

150%.

00:34.009 –> 00:39.770

To meet rising demand, the expansion will float

Toto’s production capacity in the Americas up

00:39.770 –> 00:43.849

to some 1 million units annually across its

Morro, Lakewood,

00:43.889 –> 00:48.209

and Mexico plants.

The new building in Morro will add capacity to

00:48.209 –> 00:55.009

make another 300,000 toilets each year.

As Toto faced extended lead times even from

00:55.009 –> 00:58.810

its own plants, it hopes more regional U.S.

Production will

00:58.909 –> 01:03.299

ensure more timely delivery and unclog its

North American supply chain.

01:03.419 –> 01:08.339

The company took the plunge on the project in

June 2023 on the site of its original Morro

01:08.339 –> 01:11.099

plant.

Construction wrapped in November 2024,

01:11.150 –> 01:13.739

and the company’s production bowl will begin to

fill this fall.

01:13.860 –> 01:18.970

The expansion adds about 161,500 square feet of

advanced manufacturing space,

01:19.180 –> 01:23.970

bringing the three-story facility to more than

363,000 square feet.

01:24.220 –> 01:27.660

It will also help sustain 420 local jobs.

01:28.040 –> 01:31.779

The new facility relies heavily on advanced

manufacturing technologies,

01:32.150 –> 01:37.830

including a tank bonding robot, a first for any

Toto Group plant that positions and bonds

01:37.830 –> 01:43.470

tanks to bowls for one-piece toilets, 34

advanced robots that streamline everything from

01:43.470 –> 01:49.830

molding to finishing, 6 self-driving AGVs that

can carry 3 toilets each between molding,

01:49.910 –> 01:53.870

drying, glazing, and firing over approximately

44 yards,

01:54.029 –> 01:57.870

high-pressure casting equipment that can make

larger, more complex designs.

01:58.209 –> 02:02.400

Heat-resistant QR codes that enable real-time

tracking, quality control,

02:02.569 –> 02:05.760

and big data analysis to optimize the

manufacturing processes.

02:05.930 –> 02:11.289

And finally, two convection-heated kilns with

advanced insulation and digital temperature

02:11.289 –> 02:14.929

control.

The kilns scheduled to be installed in 2027

02:14.929 –> 02:21.289

will improve energy efficiency and cut CO2

emissions by some 23% compared to the company’s

02:21.289 –> 02:25.289

current kilns.

Toto began operations in the Americas in 1989

02:25.289 –> 02:30.309

in California. In 1991, they launched U.S.-based manufacturing in

Lakewood, Georgia, and five years later in ’96,

02:30.309 –> 02:35.729

it opened its first major manufacturing

facility in Morrow for fiscal year 2024.

02:35.729 –> 02:41.550

Total USA recorded sales of

$464 million.

02:41.550 –> 02:44.179

$464 million.

02:44.389 –> 02:49.910

total USA CEO said, quote, this expansion

cements our leadership in luxury bathroom

02:49.910 –> 02:54.460

innovation while creating a more agile,

resilient manufacturing network.

02:54.710 –> 02:55.860

I’m David Manti.

02:56.149 –> 02:57.669

This is Manufacturing Now.
