It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chris Shaw, Chief Executive Officer of Utility Bidder. Chris was not only an exceptional leader but also a respected figure in the energy consultancy sector and a close colleague to all who worked with him.
Chris joined Utility Bidder in January 2018, bringing with him a wealth of experience from a distinguished career spanning over two decades in business innovation, leadership and strategic growth in the insurance sector. Under his guidance, Utility Bidder experienced transformative growth, expanding its presence and reputation as a trusted voice in the energy procurement space. Chris’s vision helped shape Utility Bidder into the award-winning company it is today.
Beyond his role at Utility Bidder, Chris was also actively involved in shaping the broader energy consultancy landscape. As one of the founders of the Energy Consultants Association (ECA), he played a key role in coordinating the interests of business energy consumers, energy brokers and suppliers whilst promoting collaboration and ethical practices across the industry. His commitment to raising standards and supporting a more transparent and effective energy market has helped bring change in the industry and earned him the respect of colleagues and competitors alike. He was a passionate advocate for a fairer, more efficient energy market and pushed this with brokers, suppliers and regulatory bodies.
In 2024, Chris was recognised by the industry and his peers when he was named Industry Expert of the Year at the TELCA Awards, a reflection of the high regard in which he was held across the sector. Under his leadership, Utility Bidder was also named Consultancy of the Year twice, a testament to his strategic vision and the culture of excellence he helped foster within the business.
Chris was known not only for his business acumen but also for his unwavering commitment to his team, his mentorship of young professionals, and his warm, approachable leadership style. He believed in empowering others, championing collaboration and always doing the right thing by customers and colleagues alike.
Above all, Chris will be remembered for his humanity, his humour and his ability to bring people together. His loss will be felt profoundly by all at Utility Bidder, the energy community, and the many people whose lives he touched.
Outside of work Chris enjoyed family life and outdoor passions including travelling, all of which played an important part in his life. He was also an avid follower of Formula 1, football and cricket.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and all those who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Our thanks to Utility Bidder for providing the text above.
We are also grateful to John Haw, Vice Chair, Energy Consultants Association for the following words:
Chris was a driving force behind the creation of the ECA. From the very beginning, he gave generously of his time, energy, and wisdom to ensure brokers had a collective voice. He championed higher standards across the sector, guided us through key milestones and worked tirelessly to build the strong, reputable association we are today.
Quite simply, without Chris, the ECA would not have achieved the success it has. His commitment and vision leave a lasting legacy and we owe him a great deal. He approached me with the initial idea and due to his sheer enthusiasm I felt compelled to work with him on the project.
He had a natural exuberance and passion for all that he did. I really got to know Chris during the establishment of the ECA. Being both CEOs working with private equity, we would often share challenges in an honest and candid manner. He used to tease me for looking much older than him, despite being a month younger! I and the rest of the ECA were incredibly fond of him and our thoughts and prayers are with Chris’s family at this difficult time.
