The alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) market continued its upward trajectory in June and electric vehicle (EV) sales posting their strongest monthly growth yet, according to Dealer Auction’s latest EV Performance Report (EVPR).
The data shows the average mileage for AFVs held steady at 29,450 miles, remaining under the 30,000-mile mark and mirroring the year-to-date trend. The average vehicle age was also consistent at 3.4 years.
Importantly for the trade, average retail margins stayed strong, reinforcing ongoing demand for newer, lower-mileage stock.
One of the most notable figures from the June report was a 56% month-on-month rise in EV sales – the sharpest growth in the AFV sector. Although EVs still represent a relatively small share of the market (growing from 0.83% to 1.33%), the spike signals a renewed surge in consumer confidence.
“We’re very encouraged by these latest EV figures, alongside the emerging trend towards younger vehicles in the market,” said Kieran TeeBoon, marketplace director at Dealer Auction. “Increased profitability and growing buyer interest are promising indicators of the exciting potential ahead for the EV sector.”
Volvo XC90 leads on margin
June also saw the hybrid Volvo XC90 reclaim the top spot for average retail margin, delivering an unprecedented profit of £6,572 per unit – the highest figure ever recorded.
“This model has proven to be a consistent favourite for both dealers and consumers,” said TeeBoon. “Its performance this month has been exceptional and shows just how strong the demand remains for high-quality hybrids.”
The XC90 also topped Dealer Auction’s Retail Margin Monitor for vehicles retailing over £10,000, across all fuel types, further cementing its position as a dealer favourite.
Among fully electric models, Tesla’s Model 3 continued to dominate, taking first place in CAP performance and second in average retail margin.
Hyundai also enjoyed a strong month, with both hybrid and EV models making significant gains. The Hyundai Tucson earned top ten positions in CAP performance, average sales, and average margin. Meanwhile, the all-electric Hyundai Kona ranked sixth for average margin.
“June has been a highly impressive month for AFVs,” TeeBoon concluded. “We’re starting to see clear preferences emerge for specific models, with dealerships and consumers gaining a stronger understanding of which AFVs drive the best sales. It’ll be fascinating to watch whether these trends continue and what new positive developments come to the forefront.”
