A 105-year-old manufacturing firm in Dudley is making strides in decarbonisation after securing £100,000 from the Mayor’s business support scheme.

Thomas Dudley Ltd, a fourth-generation family business producing plastic plumbing products, is one of 4,000 West Midlands firms receiving support to slash energy use and carbon emissions through the Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS).

The £100,000 grant, combined with the company’s own investment, has funded new energy-efficient manufacturing equipment, LED lighting, and a low-carbon heating system. These upgrades are expected to cut over 300 tonnes of CO₂ annually and reduce energy bills by £200,000 a year.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker praised the company’s move: “We’re helping manufacturers stay competitive so they can keep growing and providing good local jobs.”

Martin Dudley, company chairman and great-grandson of the founder, said: “High energy costs are one of our biggest challenges. The BEAS audit was a real eye-opener, and the funding has turbocharged our group-wide decarbonisation plans.”

The West Midlands has more energy-intensive businesses than any UK region. BEAS, delivered by the WMCA and DESNZ, offers SMEs free audits and match funding of up to £100,000. Eligible investments include new equipment, solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, and more.
