The iconic landscapes of Kent’s Stour Valley have been enhanced following a major power line undergrounding project by UK Power Networks.
With a £485,000 investment, 2km of overhead power lines and 27 poles have been removed from the Kent Downs National Landscape, improving views around the village of Wye and the Grade II registered parkland of Olantigh House.
The scheme is part of UK Power Networks’ ongoing power line undergrounding initiative, which aims to improve the visual character of protected rural areas.
Projects are selected by regional steering groups chaired by Natural England, with Kent Downs National Landscape nominating this particular location.
Carl Bennett, surveyor at UK Power Networks said: “Wye is a picturesque medieval village situated within the ‘Kent Downs’ along the famous ‘Pilgrim’s Way’.
“UK Power Networks’ investment has enhanced the visual amenity and natural character of the area, opening up stunning vistas for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors alike.”
The transformation has been welcomed by the local community.
Tim Owen, Senior National Landscape Manager at Kent Downs, added: “Seeing the unimpeded views across the Stour Valley and through the historic parkland is such an impressive change.”
Since 2014, UK Power Networks has removed 64km of overhead power lines from nationally protected areas in the South East and East of England, investing around £7 million to support biodiversity, heritage and access to nature.
