The former Ravenscraig steelworks site could soon be home to one of the UK’s largest green AI data centres, thanks to a £3.9 billion proposal from renewable developer Apatura. The 550MW facility would power cutting-edge AI technology using Scotland’s growing supply of renewable energy.
Located in North Lanarkshire, the site forms part of a wider regeneration plan for Ravenscraig and has been put forward as a candidate for the UK Government’s AI Growth Zone initiative. If selected, the development could contribute 0.4% to Scotland’s GDP and create over 2,000 long-term jobs.
The site will utilise constrained wind and solar power—energy often wasted due to grid bottlenecks—supporting grid stability and lowering consumer costs. With 1.6GW of confirmed grid connections across five central belt locations, Apatura is one of the UK’s most advanced developers in AI infrastructure.
Apatura CEO Giles Hanglin said: “This project would make Scotland a powerhouse of green, AI-enabled digital infrastructure.”
The new centre would be built on 160 acres near the Wishaw Deviation railway line, adjacent to the SevenFourEight industrial zone. Apatura is working with North Lanarkshire Council and Ravenscraig Ltd to deliver the plans.
