Swedish biofuels giant Jord AB, has reached a major milestone in its mission to deliver clean, locally produced renewable fuel across Africa.

The Municipal Council of Sakar in southern Senegal has officially allocated 300 hectares of land to Jord Africa for a flagship biofuel project, with a further 700 hectares expected to follow.

The land, located between Dassilamé and Taiba-Bodiancounda in the Sédhiou region, has remained unused for over two decades.

Jord plans to revitalise it, producing 50,000 tonnes of solid biofuel annually.

The project will directly support Senegal’s national energy strategy, which targets 40% renewable energy by 2030.

The biofuel initiative will deliver:

  • Clean and affordable renewable energy
  • Local job creation and economic growth
  • Restoration of degraded land
  • Enhanced energy independence and climate resilience for Senegal

Souaibou Cissè, Municipality Project Coordinator, said: “We’ve already made significant sacrifices and made land available because we believe in this initiative. It will ease the burden on mothers, create jobs for our youth, and support development.”

Kemo Drame, Mayor of Sakar, added: “This initiative will bring lasting change to our people’s daily lives.”

Jord CEO Peder Dagsánth commented: “This land allocation marks the beginning of a shared journey toward sustainable development and lasting impact in Africa.”

Building on Jord’s success in the Dominican Republic, this Senegalese venture positions the company to meet Europe’s rising demand for renewable, carbon-negative fuels.

With 30 million tonnes of wood pellets imported by the EU in 2024 alone, scalable alternatives like Jord’s biofuel model are increasingly urgent.
