Local communities in and around Peterhead are being encouraged to apply for funding from the new £2 million Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) Local Fund, with key application deadlines approaching.

The fund, which will deliver £400,000 annually for five years, is part of the UK’s largest ever electricity transmission project—a 2GW subsea cable from Peterhead to Drax in Yorkshire.

Delivered by SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission, EGL2 is a £4.3bn project set for completion in 2029.

Residents have until 12 June to submit expressions of interest for project funding.

Projects can apply under priority areas co-developed with the local community, including education, skills, transport, community infrastructure, the environment and heritage.

An additional micro-grant scheme will provide up to £500 per project via local community councils.

Ricky Saez, Project Director at SSEN Transmission, said:

This fund has been shaped by the community to prioritise projects with real local impact. With construction underway, we’re calling on residents to bring forward ideas that help Peterhead thrive.

The fund aims to leave a lasting legacy for the region as part of wider efforts to support clean energy, economic growth and energy security.
