The smart meter rollout saw a welcome boost in March with 15% more installations recorded compared to the same month last year according to ElectraLink’s latest energy insight data.

Installations hit 213,000 last month, a 10% rise on February 2025. Despite the March uplift, the overall pace for the first three months of the year is largely in line with early 2024 figures.

So far this year, more than 600,000 smart meters have been installed bringing the total to 25.38 million since ElectraLink began reporting energy insights in 2012.

As usual, the regions leading the charge were East England with 25,000 installations, southern England with 23,000 and the East Midlands close behind with 21,000.

ElectraLink’s figures focus on electricity smart meter installations across Great Britain and are seen as a reliable indicator of the wider smart meter programme’s progress.

While there are now over 30 million smart meters installed in GB, DESNZ tracks dual fuel progress separately.

The smart meter rollout is a key part of Britain’s energy modernisation push with policymakers keen to encourage more households to switch to flexible tariffs and manage their energy use better.

With the government’s 2025 target to offer smart meters to every home fast approaching, the industry will be hoping that March’s momentum can be maintained to keep the rollout on track.
