World energy leaders are in London for a landmark two-day summit aimed at reshaping global energy security in an era of clean energy transition.
Convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UK Government, the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, brings together senior energy decision-makers from 60 countries and 50 leading energy firms and institutions.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are among the top speakers addressing the summit, alongside ministers, CEOs and global energy experts.
Mr Starmer used the start of the summit to make his announcement on offshore wind investment and it is seen as a reaffirmation of Labour’s ambition for the UK to lead on net zero.
The London summit kicks off at a time of fast-paced change and increasing threats.
The world is entering a new age of electricity, driven by clean energy technologies and digital innovation. This brings new opportunities but also new vulnerabilities. Diversification of supply – whether it’s oil, gas or critical minerals – remains a golden rule of energy security. We must be prepared to act quickly and collectively.”
IEA Executive Director, Fatih Birol
Recent years have seen global shocks from the pandemic, Russia’s war in Ukraine, cyberattacks and extreme weather – all while the energy system undergoes massive transformation driven by renewables, electrification and rising demand.
Discussions will centre on the resilience of power systems, security of oil and gas supplies, investment in grids, digital vulnerabilities, critical mineral supply chains, and how to manage the increasing interdependence between countries and sectors.
