Video of the moment a tanker and container ship collided has been released.
The accident, which spilled thousands of litres of jet fuel into the North Sea and has left one person missing, likely dead, happened when the Portuguese registered container ship Solong collided with the US Stena Immaculate.
The video was captured from a nearby tanker by Orca AI a company which improves shipping logistics and safety.
Yarden Gross, CEO and Co-founder of Orca AI said: “This video footage clearly shows the context of the accident, that is the fog conditions at the time, while the moment of impact is also shown clearly.
“This week’s collision is another stark reminder of the fragility of maritime navigation. Despite technological advancements, crews still rely heavily on traditional navigation tools that struggle with target detection in low visibility conditions, rough weather and dense fog. Compounding these challenges, crew fatigue remains a critical issue, reducing reaction times and increasing the risk of human error.”
The video shows the fog on the morning of the incident and the two ships colliding as the container ship seems to hit the tanker side on, an explosion follows.
The captain of the Solong has since been arrested. Humberside Police said a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, in connection with the North Sea collision.
Both the Solong and Stena Immaculate are now expected to stay afloat as the salvage work begins.
