The southern Italian region of Puglia is moving forward on using biomethane for some of its power demands.
ETW Energietechnik, in partnership with Ranieri Tonissi, has completed a biomethane plant in Taranto, designed to transform landfill gas into renewable energy.
Landfill gas is a mix of different gases created by the action of microorganisms within a landfill as they decompose organic waste, including for example, food waste and paper waste. It is approximately 40-60% methane, with the remainder being mostly carbon dioxide.
The facility, which became operational in August 2024, is now processing 4,400 standard cubic metres of landfill gas per hour, converting waste emissions into grid-ready biomethane.
The plant features innovative technology which enables landfill gas with nitrogen content exceeding 20% to be purified into high-quality biomethane, suitable for injection into the national grid.
The new plant however, ensures a methane recovery rate of over 95%, making it a highly efficient solution for reducing emissions.
This project highlights biomethane’s potential in cutting emissions and enhancing sustainability, turning landfill waste into a valuable clean energy source.
Puglia is an agricultural region and the opportunites of biomethane across the state are significant.
