If you are thinking of jetting off to somewhere sunny, your flight is now just a bit cleaner and greener.

At the start of this month the UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate officially launched and now, at least 2% of all jet fuel used on flights taking off from the UK, must come from sustainable sources like used cooking oil or household waste.

By 2030, that figure will rise to 10%, with an ambitious target of 22% by 2040. SAF slashes carbon emissions by an average of 70% compared to traditional jet fuel.

Labour says this positions the UK as a global leader in decarbonising aviation and supports the government’s Plan for Change.

By 2030, 1.2 million tonnes of SAF will power UK flights annually – enough to circle the planet 3,000 times – creating thousands of skilled jobs and driving economic growth.

SAF is set to transform the aviation industry, reducing its carbon footprint while boosting the UK’s clean energy credentials.

The launch follows the first meeting of the Jet Zero Taskforce, a group tasked with charting a clear path toward net zero aviation.

The government has also confirmed plans for a revenue certainty mechanism to attract investment in UK SAF plants, ensuring the industry has the backing it needs to thrive.
