Today is World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme is ‘workplace mental health’, which is why the automotive charity Ben is raising awareness about mental health within this industry so that automotive people get the support they need.

Earlier this year Ben published research showing one in four automotive workers (27%) reported issues managing their mental health.

It was concerned that overwhelming 99.6% of automotive people have been affected by a health and wellbeing issue over the previous 12 months. Stress remains the most common health & wellbeing issue that automotive employees face, at 56%, followed by poor sleep (51%).

Other complaints reported by many were feelings of anxiety (43% of respondents) and low mood (41%). The results clearly show that mental health issues are the most prominent of the top 10 issues and affect a number of people in the automotive industry.

The survey also revealed that 1 in 7 automotive workers are considering leaving the industry and that pay is the biggest motivator for this (29%). A total of 87% of those considering leaving the industry have had financial issues and 63% are experiencing stress at work.

A Ben spokeswoman said: “Our mental health, like our physical health, varies all the time. One day, we can feel low in mood and, the next, we can feel happier. Checking in with ourselves, seeking support when needed and connecting with others all help us look after our mental health.

“Proactively looking after our mental health can also help us deal with difficult times in the future. Whether you want to reduce stress levels, sleep better, or need help with anxiety or depression, we’re here for you.”

Ben has a range of mental health support options, including online self-help, access to SilverCloud, talking therapies and counselling.
