Ministers are reportedly preparing to introduce heat pump sales targets in 2024.

Under the proposed scheme, boiler manufacturers would face fines if they do not meet annual heat pump sales targets.

Some manufacturers warn that this could raise boiler prices by up to £180, while critics accuse them of taking advantage of the situation.

Sources told The Telegraph that officials have let the industry know the scheme will start next year.

A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson told Energy Live News: “The energy shocks of recent years have shown the urgent need to upgrade British homes.

“Our Warm Homes Plan will make them cheaper and cleaner to run, rolling out upgrades from new insulation to solar and heat pumps.

“We will respond to the consultation on ponement of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism to April 2025 in due course.”
